Revitalized Daniil Medvedev Claims Maiden Championship in Nearly 30 Months
19 of Medvedev's 21 titles have been achieved on hardcourt
A revitalized the Russian player won his initial title for nearly 30 months with a win over Corentin Moutet in the Almaty Open title decider.
The Russian, a ex- number one, has experienced a torrid period, winning just one win at the Grand Slams and experiencing a setback at the New York tournament.
His varied form on the ATP Tour - and struggles with his serve in particular - led to him dropping out of the top ten and finally parting ways with long-time coach Gilles Cervara.
Now working with his coach and Rohan Goetzke, Medvedev has gradually improved in the last few weeks - climaxing in a closely contested competitive triumph over challenger Moutet.
It is his maiden trophy following the Rome competition and initial on a hard surface since that period of 2023.
Success also signifies he has won twenty-one championships at twenty-one distinct competitions.
"It's the first time I am participating in a competition with my both daughters at once, so to get a trophy is especially meaningful," stated world number 14 Daniil Medvedev.
"This victory is in tribute of my child her name, because the initial championship I achieved when my first daughter her name was born was for her."
Medvedev, the 2021 US Open champion, had been defeated in his past six title deciders, featuring in Halle earlier this year.
Medvedev's counter-punching play style and regular outbursts on the tennis court had caused commentators to question if his ability to perform at the elite level was over.
Yet the player has altered his approach in recent weeks, attempting to come to the net and play assertively, reinforced by an better service.
He came back from a disadvantage in the initial set against the tricky opponent, taking four of the last five games to go ahead.
The pair swapped break points in the following set before Moutet, striving for his initial ATP Tour title, seized the initiative to push for a third set.
Moutet defended four early opportunities in a close deciding set before Medvedev broke to fifteen to close out the victory.
Appropriately, Medvedev earned victory with a rally at the net area, with the Frenchman incapable to control a return after over two and a half hours.
