McDonald's Netherlands Removes Artificial Intelligence Festive Advertisement In the Wake of Online Criticism.
McDonald's has taken down a holiday commercial made using Artificial Intelligence following encountering widespread online backlash.
The short spot was produced with the help of generative AI clips and was first uploaded publicly for McDonald's Netherlands on 6 December.
Audience Criticism and Removal
Shortly after its release, viewers on social media lambasted the employment of AI in the commercial. Several labeled it "creepy" and "jarringly assembled".
"This incident is an important learning as we examine the effective application of generative technology," said a representative from the company.
The advert was produced for the brand by Netherlands-based agency TBWA\Neboko and American production company The Sweetshop. It portrayed various things that might go awry during the Christmas break, using the theme "not the most wonderful time of the year".
The Trend of AI in Advertising
Commercials that feature AI tools have emerged as a growing phenomenon among major brands, especially for the Christmas period.
- Another beverage giant has similarly released back-to-back AI-generated Christmas ads.
- Technical Challenges: As segments produced with current AI video tools are susceptible to distort the more extended they are, the majority of AI video outputs tend to be about short in length.
- Broader Implications: The ad also provoked worries about automation in the advertising sector, with some critics noting it could affect work for production staff.
Defense from the Creators
Following the video's removal, a producer's chief executive, Melanie Bridge, stood by the project.
She stated, the creation took "over a month and a half" and involved creating "thousands of takes" which were then shaped in post-production "in the same way we would on any high-craft production".
"This wasn't an AI gimmick," Bridge asserted. "The result was a film."
Mixed Audience Sentiment
While the McDonald's commercial was largely criticized, the response for some AI-generated campaigns has been divisive.
For instance, a recent AI-created Christmas spot from Coca-Cola reportedly achieved a significant "positive feedback" from viewers.
However, various brands have likewise encountered backlash for using AI in marketing. Luxury brand Valentino, for example, was criticized for advertisements that some called "low-effort" and "disturbing".
The episode highlights the evolving discussion within the advertising and creative industries about the balance between AI efficiency and audience reception.
